Keto To Treat Bipolar Disorder?
Let me start this off by saying I am NOT a medical professional. Just a woman who got diagnosed with Bipolar 1 in 2008 and been struggling with it ever since. This is an experiment that I will be doing independently and sharing the results with you. Please consult your doctor before going off your medicine and trying a different form of treatment.
I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 when I was 19. I’m 34 now. I’ve been on and off different medicines for years that had detriment side effects. Mostly weight gain. As of today I’m up 60 lbs from being on bipolar and anxiety meds.
Recently I’ve been reading and watching videos about how the keto diet can help treat bipolar disorder. I remember being on the diet for weight loss a few years ago and feeling great mentally. So I’m like let me kill 2 birds with 1 stone and hop back on the keto wagon. Which brings me to today.
Starting April 1st I will be going off my meds and going on the keto diet for 1 month. Tracking how I feel mentally more so than my weight. I know this will be totally against my psychiatrist’s wishes but I want to find a natural alternative that I can live with to treating my disability.
I haven’t written on here in a while so I’m going to document my journey here. How I feel, what I eat, hey I might even share NSVs if I have them weight wise. I want to see if the research is true. Can bipolar really be treated with keto or should I just stick to my meds?
I’ll try to throw some research in there as well. I’m nervous and anxious to start this experiment but I know it’ll be worth it and if it doesn’t work I have my meds to fall back on.
I hope that you all decide to follow me on this journey. Idk if I’ll post about it on any other platforms but if I do I’ll let you know.
But until then, see you on April 1st!
