Why (Almost) All My Medium Articles Will Now Be Free

I don’t like rules when it comes to my art, which is why my publication work will be few and far between cause a lot of you are STRICT…
I hope you like the free sh*t cause that’s what you’ll be getting from now on. I can’t remember if I received an email or read an article on here about Medium cracking down on people making multiple accounts to interact on poorly(usually AI) written articles to make money. And that’s fine! People are paying up to $15/ month to read articles on here and I would be pissed if I opened a paid article and it was some poorly written, long-dash, AI bullshit! It’s not fair to writers who produce quality content, with or without AI, and it declasses the platform. I get it, I’m not mad at that.
What I AM mad at is the alleged change in payout. Medium admitted to making “changes” to how they pay writers and from what I’ve seen and read many writers have been getting paid significantly less for their work on the platform. That’s horrible. Writing articles take time. Even if you use AI. I have nothing against writers using AI to help them write an article as long as they edit it and make it fit their voice. I do it from time to time. However, that still takes time and I would flip my desk if I did all that and got paid half of what I usually got on a popular article. It’s not fair. So I’ve decided to take myself out the rat race and no longer monetize my articles.
With the exception of the occasional publication post, there will no longer be a paywall on my work. I don’t like rules when it comes to my art, which is why my publication work will be few and far between cause a lot of you are STRICT, and I get it, but at the same time…nah. LOL!
Removing the paywall will allow me to be free in my writing and not care about making a buck. It will also get more eyes on my work so I can promote my Substack newsletter, podcast and affiliate links to more people.
Fun Fact: that free post I did on Baccarat Rouge 504 got 2.6K views, 1.6K reads, ranked on Google, and resulted in almost 200 views on the YouTube video that went with it. That meant more to me than any money I could have made behind a paywall.
I know some veteran full-time writers are leaving the platform completely and I get it. Writing pays the bills. But as someone who is doing as a hobby part-time, I can afford to stay, write for free, tweak my skills, and grow an audience. Becoming a great writer takes practice and Atomic Habit says you should practice in public, so this will be me practicing in public. Now the REALLY good stuff will be over on Substack but I can have fun creating content again and I can be myself here. Which will result in WANTING to write more.
